The student who achieved the highest score in a city in this year's national college entrance exam and was admitted to the University of Hong Kong has left the university, Liaoshen Evening News reported on Friday.
The student, from Benxi, Liaoning province, who received a full scholarship from the university, wanted to attend Peking University.
Liu has been back to the senior high school that she graduated from, Benxi Senior High School, and will re-sit the college entrance exam next year.
Li Yucheng, principal of the high school, said Liu believes it will be more suitable for her to study at the Department of Chinese Language and Literature in Peking University, where she can learn Chinese culture in a more pure flavor.
