A strawberry vendor in Dalian stabbed an urban management official to death and injured two more when the officers ganged up on him and began brutally beating him.
A few chengguan, China's most unpopular officials who've been known to have a nasty streak, approached the vendor and told him to pack up shop on the grounds that he wasn't allowed to sell there until 5:00 p.m.
The 40-year old male vendor and another woman, whose identity is unknown, explained to the officials that they had always sold strawberries at 4:00 p.m., and that there had never been a problem. The chengguan took action and began removing the man's belongings forcibly.
A witness, surnamed Chen, told reporters that three or four chengguan surrounded the vendor and began violently beating him. Hopelessly trying to fight back, the vendor grabbed a knife from a nearby fruit vendor and stabbed one of the chengguan while chasing after the others. After throwing his knife at one of the officers, he quickly ran away from the scene.
According to ThePaper.cn, two officers were injured and one was pronounced dead at the hospital. The vendor has not yet been found.
Chengguan are notorious for their use of excessive violence towards street vendors, to such an extent that people have participated in massive riots against them.
